Six-Mile is a small town located in Pickens County in northwestern South Carolina. The population is approximately 550 residents. It's situated in the scenic Blue Ridge foothills near Lake Keowee. The community is home to the annual Issaqueena Festival, usually held the third Saturday of May. According to legend, Issaqueena was an Indian maiden who rode her horse 96 miles to warn an English trader named Francis Allen of a coming Cherokee attack on his fort. The festival is named for her and is a fun-filled family event with games, arts and crafts, food and other entertainment. Other special events in Six Mile include an Old Fashioned Christmas, where shop owners offer refreshments to visitors who come to watch the lighting of the Christmas lights and luminaries. Nearby Lake Keowee was constructed by the Duke Power Company and contains 18,500 acres of water and a 300-mile long shoreline. It's popular for swimming, boating, fishing, camping and picnicking. Lake Keowee is also a prime spot for retirees and vacation homes, with gated communities, lovely marinas and private docks all along the lakeshore. Lake Keowee is just downstream from Lake Jocassee and many of the communities around the lake offer golf and tennis, shopping and restaurants.

Six Mile Weather & Climate

Northwest South Carolina has a humid, subtropical climate. Areas further north in what is known as the "Upstate" area has less of the characteristics of a subtropical climate than places along the coastline. Even so, the winters are mild in northwest South Carolina and summers are warm and humid. Cyclones and thunderstorms are possible in the northern part of the state in summer and early autumn. Tornadoes are possible in the spring and again in November. Precipitation is abundant all year long, and snowfall averages six inches in the northwest. Freezing rain is more of a possibility in South Carolina than snow.
