Seneca
is a town in Oconee County in the northwestern corner of South Carolina. The population is approximately 7,500. It was named for the nearby Cherokee town of Isunigu, which was known to the English as Seneca Town. The town of Seneca is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, near Lakes Hartwell, Keowee and Jocassee. With so much beauty and outdoor recreation at hand, Seneca has attracted many retirees in recent years. The town is also home to several historic buildings and districts that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of these, the Ram Cat Alley Historic District, is home to 21 commercial buildings from the 1880s to the 1930s. The unique name came from the many cats that used to gather around the meat market. Today, many of the historic buildings have been renovated into restaurants, shops, and professional offices. Other things to do in Seneca include Jazz on the Alley, held every Thursday night, April through October, and Cruzin Main Street, a fun-filled event held the first Saturday each month, April through October. For outdoor recreation, the nearby lakes offer fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, camping, picnicking and other water sports. Autumn is a glorious time in Seneca, as the weather turns crisp and the colors of fall provide excellent photographic opportunities. Northeast Georgia has a four-season climate that is greatly influenced by the Appalachian Mountains. The climate here differs significantly from the rest of the state. Summers are warm and typically has lengthy spells of hot, humid weather. Spring and fall are mild with much variability from day to day. The first freeze is usually in October in the mountains. Winter temperatures average in the 40s during the day and 20s at night. Snow is light, with about 4 to 6 inches each year. Annual average rainfall in this region is over 60 inches. The driest months are September and October. The wettest month is March. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer.
