Lake-Keowee
is located in the northwest corner of South Carolina, just six miles from the town of Seneca and 16 miles from Clemson University. Public access to the lake is available through a variety of public boat ramps and local and state parks. The name "Keowee" is Cherokee and means Place of the Mulberries. The lake now covers Keowee Town, which was the site of the capital of the Lower Cherokee Nation (now underwater.) Lake Keowee was constructed by the Duke Power Company and contains 18,500 acres of water and a 300-mile long shoreline. A mild, four-season climate and beautiful mountain scenery makes Lake Keowee a popular place for swimming, boating, fishing, camping and picnicking. It's also becoming a prime spot for retirees and vacation homes, with gated communities, lovely marinas and private docks all along the lakeshore. This is not surprising considering the lakes forested setting in the beautiful Blue Ridge foothills. Lake Keowee is just downstream from Lake Jocassee and most of the communities around the lake offer golf and tennis, shopping and restaurants. . At the north end of the Lake Keowee is the Keowee-Toxaway State Park, with several other smaller parks situated around the lake's shore.

Lake Keowee Weather & Climate

The westernnmost mountain region of North Carolina is the smallest of the three main divisions of the state; the Coastal Plain, the Piedmont and the Mountains. However, its' range of elevation is the greatest; it stretches upward from around 1,500 feet along the eastern boundary to 6,684 feet at the summit of Mt. Mitchell. The climate is definitely effected by elevation. Overall, spring is unpredictable, summer is warm with moderate humidity, autumn is crisp and cool and winters are cold - but moderate. More extreme winter conditions can be expected at the mountain peaks. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the lower elevations. Although snow in winter is likely, most ski resorts rely on snowmaking equipment because daytime highs can often hover in the 40-degree range.
