Lake-Thurmond
, or the J. Strom Thurmond Lake, is one of the southeast's largest and most popular recreational lakes. It is a man-made lake, located on the border of South Carolina and Georgia on the Savannah, Broad and Little Rivers, just 22 miles above Augusta, Georgia. The Sumter National Forest covers most of the eastern (South Carolina) side of the lake and along the Georgia side, development has been kept to a minimum, allowing for a very rustic lake atmosphere. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Thurmond Lake between 1946 and 1954 as part of a flood control, hydropower and navigation project, and today it is one of the ten most visited Corps lakes in the country. It was originally named Clarks Hill Dam but the "s" at the end of "Clarks" was omitted due to a clerical error in the original Congressional Authorization, and the project became "Clark Hill Dam." Later, the name of the lake was changed to J. Strom Thurmond Lake to honor the longest running Senator in the U.S., who was from Edgfield, South Carolina. Lake Thurmond is comprised of nearly 71,000 acres of water with a shoreline of 1,200 miles and is well known for its largemouth and hybrid striped bass fishing. Many public marinas, parks and campgrounds are also located around the lake. Baker Creek State Park, Hamilton Branch State Recreation Area and Hickory Knob State Resort Park are situated on the shores of Thurmond Lake.

East central Georgia, along the coast, has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. In winter, snow flurries are an occasional sight, although the area does not get as much snowfall as Atlanta. This region, near the city of Augusta, is lower in elevation, near the coast, which is largely the reason for less snowfall. Freezing rain is a threat in the wintertime, however. The average high temperature in winter is 58 and the average low is 34. Summer daytime temperatures are often in the 90s and can soar as high as 100 or above.
