McCormick
is a small, historic town located in the western portion of South Carolina near Georgia. It serves as the county seat for McCormick County and has a population of approximately 1,400 residents. This area was settled in the mid-eighteenth century by Scotch-Irish, French Huguenot and German farmers, and then gold was discovered in 1850 on the spot where the town of McCormick now stands. Today, McCormick is part of what is referred to as "The Old 96 District," which is comprised of five South Carolina counties: Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens and McCormick. This region is home to several lakes, including Lake Thurmond, which is one of the southeast's largest and most popular recreational lakes. Others include Lake Greenwood, Lake Rabon, Lake Richard B. Russell and Lake Secession, and all provide excellent fishing and boating and other water related activities. Sumter National Forest is located in parts of Abbeville, Greenwood and Edgefield Counties and most of McCormick County. This beautiful natural area offers hunting, fishing, boating and camping opportunities. The Old 96 District also has miles and miles of hiking trails, motorcycle trails and horseback riding trails. There are more than a dozen golf courses near McCormick, and also state parks and recreation areas that offer picnicking, camping, swimming, playgrounds and more. If history and shopping interest you, the Old 96 District is filled with historical spots and has dozens upon dozens of antique shops and specialty shops.

McCormick Weather & Climate

Northwest South Carolina has a humid, subtropical climate. Areas further north in what is known as the "Upstate" area has less of the characteristics of a subtropical climate than places along the coastline. Even so, the winters are mild in northwest South Carolina and summers are warm and humid. Cyclones and thunderstorms are possible in the northern part of the state in summer and early autumn. Tornadoes are possible in the spring and again in November. Precipitation is abundant all year long, and snowfall averages six inches in the northwest. Freezing rain is more of a possibility in South Carolina than snow.
