Aiken
is probably most well known for its first rate ski resort, which is an integral part of a 5,700 acre four-season resort nestled high in a pristine mountain valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It's located along Highway 64 within the Nantahala National Forest between the towns of Brevard and Cashiers. Downhill skiing, snowboarding and sledding are all popular activities in the valley, but there's plenty to do all throughout the year. You'll find hiking trails to incredible waterfalls, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, canoeing, fishing, golf and so much more. It's also an area known for its gem mining, and several mines are open for public prospecting. Try your luck and you just may go home with a ruby, sapphire or blue topaz. The Whitewater Falls Scenic Area and Gorges State Park are found both found within Sapphire Valley and are both very worthwhile day trips. Whitewater Falls is where the Whitewater River drops more than 400 feet in a spectacular show of falls and cascades. Gorges State Park is 7,100 acres of temperate rain forest and waterfalls. The State Park offers camping, fishing, boating, picnicking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Sapphire Valley is a short drive from the town of Highlands, which is known for its fine restaurants and the small towns of Brevard and Cashiers offer many unique gift shops and art galleries.

East central Georgia, along the coast, has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. In winter, snow flurries are an occasional sight, although the area does not get as much snowfall as Atlanta. This region, near the city of Augusta, is lower in elevation, near the coast, which is largely the reason for less snowfall. Freezing rain is a threat in the wintertime, however. The average high temperature in winter is 58 and the average low is 34. Summer daytime temperatures are often in the 90s and can soar as high as 100 or above.
