Lake-Moultrie
is part of the Santee Lakes Region located in the heart of South Carolina. This area consists of Lake Moultrie, Lake Marion, the Santee River, the Cooper River and the Congaree River. The Santee Lakes Region offers navigable waterways all the way from just outside Columbia, South Carolina to the Charleston Harbor and the Intracoastal Waterway. Needless to say, this makes it a very popular boating and fishing destination for many visitors. Both Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion are known for their prime trout fishing and the area is also becoming very popular for the numerous golf courses that surround the lakes. Santee State Park, located on the south shore of Lake Marion, serves as the headquarters for the area and offers camping, hiking trails and picnicking. The Hatchery Waterfowl Management Area at Lake Moultrie offers several hiking trails and is a popular fishing spot on the lake. On the north side of the lake is the Sandy Beech Wildlife Management area, which features several hiking trails through the wetlands, plus access to the Palmetto Hiking Trail. Other places of interest around Lake Moultrie include the Dennis Wildlife Center and Canal Recreation Area, and the Eutaw Springs Battleground, site of the last important Revolutionary War battle in the Carolinas. Lake Moultrie is approximately 50 minutes to historic Charleston.

Central South Carolina ,in the Lake Marion region, has hot, humid summers and mild winters. Central South Carolina generally experiences brief cold spells in the winter, but it usually snows only in the mountains and Upper Piedmont area, and even there the average accumulation is only six inches. On average, the state receives 49 inches of precipitation per year, mostly in the form of rain. March is the wettest month in the inland, central region of the state. Spring and summer thunderstorms are common in central South Carolina, and tornadoes are a possibility. The climate is classified as humid, sub-tropical.
