Lake-Marion
is the largest inland lake in South Carolina, and covers approximately 110,000 acres of land in five counties: Berkeley, Calhoun, Clarendon, Orangesburg and Sumter. Its called South Carolinas Inland Sea. Along with Lake Moultrie, the Santee Cooper Project created Lake Marion in the 1940s, and today it's considered part of the Santee Lakes Region, which lies in the heart of South Carolina. Both Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie are quite well known for their landlocked striped bass. Santee State Park occupies 2,500 acres on the south shore of Lake Marion and offers camping, several hiking trails, picnicking, birdwatching and other activities. Park hours are Monday through Sunday 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. year round. Other attractions in the Lake Marion area include the Santee Cooper Wildlife Management Area, where you'll find access to the Palmetto Hiking Trail, and the Eutaw Springs Battleground, site of the last important Revolutionary War battle in the Carolinas. Indian Bluff Recreational Park is a nice place to spend a relaxing afternoon on Lake Marion and offers a short boardwalk through the woods, a fishing pier, boat ramp, picnic tables, playground and restrooms. Taw Caw Park features picnicking areas and an extensive network of boardwalks around Taw Caw Creek, where it empties into Lake Marion. The Lake Marion Golf Course and Santee Cooper Resort are also located near this lake.

Central South Carolina ,in the Lake Marion region, has hot, humid summers and mild winters. Central South Carolina generally experiences brief cold spells in the winter, but it usually snows only in the mountains and Upper Piedmont area, and even there the average accumulation is only six inches. On average, the state receives 49 inches of precipitation per year, mostly in the form of rain. March is the wettest month in the inland, central region of the state. Spring and summer thunderstorms are common in central South Carolina, and tornadoes are a possibility. The climate is classified as humid, sub-tropical.
