Anderson is a city located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northwestern South Carolina, in an area known as "The Upstate." It lies along the shoreline of Lake Hartwell, which is one of the largest recreational lakes in the southeast. As of 2006, the population of Anderson was 26,242. However, it's at the center of an large, urbanized area of approximately 70,500 residents. The city of Anderson lies just off I-85, and is about 120 miles from Atlanta and 140 miles from Charlotte. Anderson is called "The Friendliest City in South Carolina," and was named an "All-American" city in 2000 by the National Civic League for its' high quality of life. The town is also home to Anderson University, which is a private school of about 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students. For recreation, Lake Hartwell features several boat ramps and marinas, and its known as one of the best fishing and boating lakes in the southeast U.S. Other recreation in the area includes golf, hiking, horseback riding, white water rafting, canoeing, rock climbing and mountain biking. Several campgrounds are also located at Lake Hartwell. Also near Anderson, you will find several beautiful waterfalls, and one of the largest flea markets in the Southeast. The city of Anderson offers fine dining, and more than 1,400 hotel and motel rooms, several bed & breakfasts inns and vacation home rentals. A Visitors Center is located in downtown Anderson inside the Anderson Arts Center Warehouse.

Anderson Weather & Climate

Northwest South Carolina has a humid, subtropical climate. Areas further north in what is known as the "Upstate" area has less of the characteristics of a subtropical climate than places along the coastline. Even so, the winters are mild in northwest South Carolina and summers are warm and humid. Cyclones and thunderstorms are possible in the northern part of the state in summer and early autumn. Tornadoes are possible in the spring and again in November. Precipitation is abundant all year long, and snowfall averages six inches in the northwest. Freezing rain is more of a possibility in South Carolina than snow.
