Greenville
is located in northwestern South Carolina and is the second largest city in the state. As of the 2010 census, it had an "urban" population of 302,194, but the population of the entire metropolitan area is 636,986. It sits in an area of South Carolina known as "The Upstate." Greenville is approximately halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte, North Carolina. The city offers extensive attractions and activities. Falls Park on the Reedy is a large park located in downtown Greenville with several waterfalls and beautiful gardens. It includes Liberty Bridge, which is a pedestrian suspension bridge that overlooks the Reedy River. One of the most interesting attractions in Greenville is its CrossWinds Golf Club, which has the only golf course in the world where each hole was conceived by a different designer. CrossWinds is a public Par 3 course that can be played in one hour for 9 holes or in 2 hours for 18 holes. Other attractions in Greenville include the County Museum of Art, noted for its collection of works by Andrew Wyeth, the Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery and the Roper Mountain Science Center. Greenville offers a thriving arts community and was named one of the "Top 100 Small Arts Towns in the United States." The city is also host to several annual festivals. Euphoria Greenville is a three-day event that includes cooking demonstrations and wine seminars, multi-course dinners, tasting events and live music. The Indie Craft Parade is an annual festival held in September in Greenville that features artists from all over the Southeast. Other special events include Fall for Greenville, Artisphere and the Upstate Shakespeare Festival.

Northwestern South Carolina has a humid, subtropical climate, although the area known as "Upstate" has less of the characteristics of a subtropical climate than places along the coastline. Even so, the winters are mild in northwest South Carolina and summers are warm and humid. Cyclones and thunderstorms are possible in the northern part of the state in summer and early autumn. Tornadoes are possible in the spring and again in November. Precipitation is abundant all year long, and snowfall averages six inches in the northwest. Freezing rain is more of a possibility in South Carolina than snow.
