St-Helena-Island
is one of the many South Carolina Sea Islands, located between the city of Beaufort and the beaches of Harbor, Hunting and Fripp Islands. The area includes vast fields of truck farms, marshlands framed by massive live oaks and golfing and waterfront communities. St. Helena Island is also the center of African-American Gullah culture and language. African American slaves, Native Americans and indentured servants from Europe produced what is known as the Gullah culture, and it is here that many freed slaves lived in relative isolation after the Civil War. Numerous early forts were located on the Sea Island, including Fort Fremont, which is on Lands End at the southern tip of St. Helena. Across the St. Helena Sound is Parris Island, the site of several more historic forts. The historic school, Penn Center, became one of the country's most historically significant African-American educational and cultural institutions. In 1974, the U.S. Department of the Interior named Penn Center a National Historic Landmark. "The Corner" on St. Helena Island is a lively arts and crafts center where artisans and craftspeople work in their colorful studios. Local restaurants on St. Helena offer Gullah specialties, as well as favorites like crab burgers and fresh shrimp. St. Helena also has interesting historic ruins to visit, such as old tabby foundations and the antebellum Chapel of Ease. Miles and miles of waterfront property are still undeveloped on St. Helena.

Southeast South Carolina, along the coast , has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Winters are short and very mild, with less than an inch of measurable snowfall per year. Occasional rain is likely in winter, with freezing rain a possibility, but more likely inland. Precipitation is abundant all year long, with thunderstorms in spring and summer. The South Carolina coast is prone to tropical cyclones and hurricanes, with the annual hurricane season running June through November. The most notable hurricane was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Warning is generally given to residents prior to hurricanes, giving them plenty of time to prepare.
