Pee-Dee
is an area of South Carolina located in the northeast corner of the state. It encompasses a seven-county area that includes the Grand Strand region of the South Carolina coast. Pee Dee, which was named for the Native American Indians that originally inhabited the area, is a major tourist attraction of the state of South Carolina. It's also become popular with retirees, due to the relatively low cost of living and its many golf courses. Pee Dee includes rivers, marshes, forests, bays, bald cypress and pine plantations. Steeped in history of the early Native Americans, as well as the Revolutionary and Civil War eras, Pee Dee Country offers preserved homes and plantations and historic cemeteries. It's a fine example of the Old South, where both cotton and tobacco have played an important role in the growth of the area. The South Carolina Cotton Trail weaves through 3 of the Pee Dee counties and highlights this era of the region. Pee Dee Country is also home to three state parks, four scenic rivers, over 30 golf courses and many city and county parks. Aside from golf, enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, rafting, kayaking, picnicking, scenic drives and wildlife viewing. Pee Dee is also home to many special events, such as the Cotton Festival, Tobacco Festival, Sweet Potato Festival, the Quilt Festival, the Barbeque Shag Festival, Greek Festival, the Catfish Festival, the Black Heritage Arts Festival or the International Festival.

Northeast South Carolina, in the coastal plain, has terrain that is mostly flat. The combination of low elevation, relatively low latitude and warm Gulf stream from the Atlantic Ocean, combines to create a climate with warm, humid summers and short, mild winters. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer and sometimes in the autumn. Hail and damaging winds often occur along with the summer thunderstorms. Tornadoes are uncommon unless a tropical cyclone is present. Precipitation is abundant throughout the entire year, and the coastline tends to have a slightly wetter summer. Hurricanes are a threat along the coast of South Carolina with the typical season running June through November. However, plenty of warning is generally given for these types of storms.
