Columbia
is located in the center of South Carolina at the junctions of Interstates 20, 26 and 77. It is the state's capital and county seat of Richland County and is South Carolina's most populated city. The University of South Carolina's main campus is located in Columbia and the city is host to the South Carolina State Fair each year. Also, part of the city of Columbia extends into Lexington County. A very historic city, Columbia was settled by Europeans in the early 1700s and chosen as the new state capital in 1786. It was chartered as a town in 1805 and as a city in 1854 and named for Christopher Columbus. Columbia offers an active arts and cultural community, lots of recreational opportunities, exciting attractions and down-home Southern hospitality. Some of the attractions in the city include the Columbia Museum of Art, EdVenture Children's Museum, Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden, the South Carolina State House Museum and South Carolina State House Art Collection. Columbia is home to Lake Murray, a beautiful lake with 649 miles of shoreline that offers boating, sailing, fishing, swimming, skiing and camping. The city of Columbia is also home to many festivals and special events throughout the year, including the 3 Rivers Music Festival and the annual Columbia Blues Festival, an International Festival and Greek Festival and the Historic Columbia's Candlelight Holiday Tour.

The central inland region of South Carolina has a humid, subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. The climate is influenced by the state's relatively low latitude and low elevation, and proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. Inland South Carolina generally experiences brief cold spells in the winter, with snow usually only occurring in the mountains and Upper Piedmont area. On average, the state receives 49 inches of precipitation per year, most in the form of rain. The state is prone to tropical storms and hurricanes from June through November, but areas along the coastline are most vulnerable to this type of storm. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer.
